Tim Barry at The Old Blue Last, Shoreditch

002

Incredibly enough, I went against tradition the other night, left the house and went to a gig for the first time in ages. Although it was acoustic, so I felt my aging heart would probably take it. It could almost have been described as a culture shock, as it did differ somewhat to my usual schedule of painting monsters. And I did in fact see some quite shocking things on my way there. I had gone to Shoreditch, after all. After dodging my way through the weird fucking zombies, bizarre fashion dunces and a vast array of folk that looked like they’d got dressed in the dark, I finally made it to the venue and spent a bit of time hanging with my mate and chewing the proverbial fat about music and that.

Feeble Screams From Forests Unknown Part 4

This is part four of the Tale of a Gamer series, this particular set of articles centers around my Wood Elf army, as it grows.

I say Wood Elf army, but as it stands my army is 100% the creatures of Athel Loren: Treeman, Dryads, Branchwraiths, Tree Kin and soon to be an Eagle. And, if i’m brutally honest, for the time being I’m quite liking that. Fuck the meddling elderkin, this ill shit was here first.

metaldryads

For the 500 points, I’m pretty much there. I’ll take a Branchnymph for my unit of Dryads, three Tree Kin, an Eagle and a Branchwraith for HQ. I’m assuming this sits in with my infantry, but I’m not sure on this point as I’ve only read the fluff in the army book. I’m shit at rules, that’s what John Marsden’s for. But I digress, that’s about 460 points, add a few magical things and we’re ready to rock at 500.

As Wicked…

IMG_0008

While I still haven’t put together a 500 point list yet, I wanted to try out the paint scheme I thought of for these nasty little bastards. I already know I will be fielding a lot of Night Goblins in the list so it’s safe for me to move forward. I didn’t want to just black, or dark grey. I was thinking of either midnight blue, or a dark turquoise. I settled on the latter, and got to work. Continue reading

Band Of the Week – BELOW

a3824579440_2

Right I’m off on holiday for a week so you’re getting Band Of the Week a few days early. I’m sure you can cope.

Atonement Records continue their crusade to resurrect the husk of 90’s Hardcore by unleashing the debut recordings from Manchester’s BELOW upon an unexpecting scene.
Darke’s been hinting about these guys via twitter for a while but with no live shows as yet and a rumoured demo that (until now) could well have been a product of his fevered imagination, I was starting to wonder if the poor lad hadn’t conjured his very own 90’s moshcore version of Harvey The Rabbit.

An idiots guide to painting pre-Heresy Death Guard

It’s kind of weird thinking back to my first forays into painting miniatures at the age of 10.  I wonder if I ever thought I’d still be at it 25 years later? Probably didn’t even spare it a thought if I’m honest. Anyway, here I am, and thankfully my skill level has increased a bit, and I’m older if not wiser. Having said that, some habits don’t change over time.  I still paint with music on, and I still pull the brush bristles back into shape with my lips.

Anyway, enough of this nostalgic clap-trap. For my first CoreHammer article I’m going to talk you through my painting process. In this particular example, I’ll be painting a Games Workshop chaos marine in terminator armour, which I’ve spiced up a bit using Forge World’s Death Guard Terminator upgrade kit, and a Forgecraft resin base. I’ll be doing him in the pre-Heresy Death Guard colour scheme, as it’s a bit more exciting than doing him green all over, and more importantly, he’ll then fit in with the scheme for my army. Living How You’re Not – In Defence Of…

magic-the-gathering-logo-2

So we all know, that just like hardcore, there is a social structure to gaming. Luckily, wargamers are the second to top of that structure. Functional wargamers – that is to say, gentlemen like you and I, who wash on a daily basis, put a lil’ deodorant on in the morning, who have jobs and the likes – they’re the top. Furries are the bottom. But, not far from the Furries, so I am now beginning to learn, are players of Magic: The Gathering.

Terror Of the Lichemaster.

Terror Of the Lichemaster.

This is the first of what I hope will be an ongoing (albeit occasional) series exploring some classic (and in my opinion) under appreciated vintage fantasy artwork. The stuff that sunk its filthy claws into the meat of our imaginations and dragged us from the brightly lit path of adolescence and into the murky depths of the hobby. I’m certain the other members of the crew are going to chime in with their favorites so you can expect a myriad selection of different tastes, interpretations and ideas.

Try and cast your mind back to your earliest memories of all this Warhammer shit. I’ll wager that one of the first things you can recall was a particular piece of artwork, maybe a book cover, a poster or a gamebox package drawing that captured your attention. Some image that still lingers in your thoughts.. that fascinated, inspired or terrified you. Certainly for me, back then the artwork was the gateway. It was the forbidden door left slightly ajar, the seductive whisper that beckoned you come a little closer, slyly dared you to take a look inside…..

The Weight of Words – Blog Recommendations Part I

I think one of the things I love about being a part of the Corehammer crew is that my knowledge of the hobby has improved vastly over the last 6 months. Not just in one area, but across gaming, painting and fluff as well as being exposed to all kinds of music (shock, some of it’s not hardcore). A lot of this knowledge has come about from our own experiences (sharing this was one of the driving reasons to start this blog) but also from other blogs, podcasts and people from Twitter and such. With this in mind, we wanted to start sharing with you the pool of resources we dip into from time to time. Expect many more of these posts in the future (as there is only so much procrastinating you can get away with at one time). But first, here is In My Eyes…

Which Brushes.

IMG_0002

You’ll only ever need this many brushes if you’re a complete moron.

The topic of brushes is one that comes up in painting conversations a hell of a lot, and it can be something of a minefield, given the amount of variables that go into choosing the correct brush for your project, budget, materials, and style. As a moron, I’ve tried a lot of different ones over the last few years in an effort to find what works best for my particular painting needs, so here’s a rundown of some of my findings. It is far from an exhaustive list, and it’s far from perfect, but you might find something that works for you contained herein.
