About Kev Walsh

Kev Walsh lives in Liverpool England. He has played in numerous hardcore and punk bands over the last 10 years including Seconds Out, The Last Chance and Down And Outs. Kev focusses most of his efforts on painting rather than playing, and is currently trying to push himself to learn some new tricks.

Painting Green Crystals

mining_crystals

A while back, a message dropped in the inbox of the Corehammer Crew email. We get requests here and there, but not too many, and this one was specific to painting, so I thought I would have a crack at it. It was from a newer gamer, who wanted to achieve a green, crystal like appearance on the Shuriken Catapults on her Eldar. We had a little back and forth where I asked her to clarify what she was hoping to achieve, and I asked for a reference point. From there I knocked up a little guide and I thought it would be worth posting up here just in case anyone else wanted to achieve a similar effect. It also isn’t too bad an introduction to the push-pull glazing technique that organisations like Miniature Mentor are keen to show off.

Show Me How The Gods Chill – New Cold World Record full stream

cold-worldAlong with Down To Nothing, Cold World are probably responsible for one of the highest injury counts amongst the whole of the Corehammer Crew (and taking up an inordinate amount of OC’s wardrobe space). Furthermore, Dan Mills dreams of one day having a Space Marine army that is all black, with just red eyes. Vice have got a grip of their new record and are streaming it in full over on their site.

When ‘Dedicated To Babies Who Came Feet First’ was released, I grabbed it pretty quick. A weird, kind of trippy record with nods to a whole host of music and roots placed firmly in the nineties, all underpinned with some of the hardest mosh parts you will hear. This record carries on from that and pushes the boundaries even further (including an appearance from the legend that is Kool G. Rap on Hell’s Direction). When it comes to hardcore, I tend to like where the boundaries are: sound like Side By Side or fuck off. Cold World are one of the few exceptions. This record rips. It’s hard, it’s well thought out, it makes me want to stomp around in power armour. Check it out on the link above.

Oath Of Moment: For The Khan

Squad

Prior to entering the Dark Throne tournament, I’d not played 6th edition at all. Up until a few weeks before the tournament I was confident that I would end up dropping out, but I had a few practice games with Pete and it gave me that little boost I needed. Although I came 26th out of 34, it shook something up in me, and made me want to play more, and finish my army.

An Interview with John Keys

JK - Misc1

John Keys is fast becoming one of the most recognised painters in the UK. A quick look at his Putty & Paint page shows some extremely high standard work, with a style focussing on extremely natural looking, atmospheric, and somewhat bleak dioramas. I met John about a year back at a Weekend Workshop painting weekend. We hit it off straight away, and I was struck by the standard of his work, which seemed a good few notches above most of the other painters there, myself included. So, being the parasite that I am, I latched on to him, and have yet to let him free from my grasp. Over the last 12 months the work John has chosen to share on forums such as WAMP and Platoon Britannica has shown considerable improvements from the already high standard I witnessed last year. As the level of his work continues to move forwards, his name starts to reach further and further afield.

The Weekend Workshop – October Painting Workshop in Liverpool

poster1

Fresh off the back of the Upping Your Paint Game article, The Weekend Workshop offer you the perfect chance to channel that newly found desire to push those skills as far as you can. I’ve been present at the last three of these workshops, and I can attest to their value. To sit with a master painter for two solid days, paint with them, talk with them, see their work first hand, have them critique your own work… there is a value to all these things that can not be understated. What is equally important, is the meeting of new painters, all of a similar level, all with a similar drive, and getting to hang out for a weekend of hobbying the likes of which you won’t often experience. They are listed as 10 hour days but honestly, not a single workshop I’ve attended has lasted any shorter than 11/12 hours, such is the amount of enthusiasm and passion to learn. The cost is more than made up for, and you will come away feeling as though you’ve got your absolute moneys worth. Check below for all the information you’re going to need.

Upping Your Paint Game – What to do when you want to push those skills further.

Rafa main image

Brother Fonsel, by Rafael García Marín (Volomir). An incredible painter, a very incredible male. Source – www.puttyandpaint.com

Once a person has their basic skills nailed, there is usually a period of transition. At least, there was for me. Your drybrushing and edge highlighting and washing is all fine, and you’re ready to progress. But how to do so? Barring a few examples, White Dwarf guides have always proved inadequate, and usually only show you how to paint their own style, which very often is at odds with GD winners, and the stuff you see on CMON. So once you’ve made that decision, to start upping your game when it comes to painting, where do you turn? If your only hobby friends are gamers who paint to get their armies on the table, it might be difficult to break through and see how many amazing resources there are out there. So here, I present a guide for anyone looking to make that step. It is by no means comprehensive, and it is completely malleable to your own situation, but it should help you make those first few steps in to a much more colourful and well blended world.

Painting Buddha / Master Minis DVD review.

IMG_0011MasterMinis has been a site growing in popularity for the last year. I guess theres a word to describe the diligence of creator Michael Bartels (henceforth referred to by his screen name Zaphod.) That word is quirky. I haven’t met the man, but am looking forward to hunting him down at Games Day UK, where Corehammer will be repping in force. But if I’ve not met him, then how can I sum him up in one word? It’s a fair question, but the reason I feel I can do this is because Zaphod injects so much of himself in to this blog. While this makes for some confusing reading sometimes, this is more than made up for by the quality of content, the unique take on the hobby that the blog brings, and the sense of humour Zaphod addsinflatable marquees. Recently, Zaphod decided to make a massive life move. He stepped away from the daily grind, and decided to push to make a living from the things he loves the most, which luckily for us, is ‘the hobby’. Here, we take our initial look at the initial release from his company, Painting Buddha.

Hasslefree Miniatures Review.

HF

Hasslefree miniatures have been around for some time now. I’ve seen their output in friends miniature cases, and on websites for a while, but have always been put off their range as I loathe the whole ‘big-breasted female with a sword’ idea of female sculpts. Seriously guys, if the girl needs a sword, she’ll also need armour that covers more than just her nipples. There are easier, and better ways to look at the female form that don’t also tell the whole world what a weird little virgin you are. Luckily, I was recently proven wrong. And I’m really happy that I was.

As Wicked…

IMG_0008

While I still haven’t put together a 500 point list yet, I wanted to try out the paint scheme I thought of for these nasty little bastards. I already know I will be fielding a lot of Night Goblins in the list so it’s safe for me to move forward. I didn’t want to just black, or dark grey. I was thinking of either midnight blue, or a dark turquoise. I settled on the latter, and got to work. Continue reading

Living How You’re Not – In Defence Of…

magic-the-gathering-logo-2

So we all know, that just like hardcore, there is a social structure to gaming. Luckily, wargamers are the second to top of that structure. Functional wargamers – that is to say, gentlemen like you and I, who wash on a daily basis, put a lil’ deodorant on in the morning, who have jobs and the likes – they’re the top. Furries are the bottom. But, not far from the Furries, so I am now beginning to learn, are players of Magic: The Gathering.
