Band Of The Week – Daylight

We’re trying to keep updates on this thing as regular as possible but obviously dropping knowledge and laughs EVERY SINGLE DAY can be somewhat tasking, even for legendary wits and all-knowing scribes like the Corehammer crew. To remedy potential midweek lulls in posting I give you Band Of The Week, a new weekly article designed purely to keep my contribution count up whilst demanding minimal effort on my part. As the name suggests, I’ll be recommending a new band to check out each week and berating you for not knowing all about a band that I only just discovered for myself the day before, idiots.

Kicking things off is Daylight from Doylestown, Pennsylvania (Not to be confused with some shower with the same name from Barcelona). Saw this lot in Leeds when they opened up (the now sadly defunct) Basement’s penultimate show. I say I saw’em, what I really mean is I watched three songs then got distracted by my mates and went outside to laugh at my own jokes for the next hour and a half. Anyway the songs I did see I really liked, but that night belonged to Basement and after their set I walked home in the rain, ate a sandwich, forgot all about Daylight and tried to move on with my life.

Fast forward six months and here we have Daylight’s new album Jar. Looks just like an old grunge record don’t it? Wobbly font and weird cover picture à la Alice In Chains or Dinosaur Jr. Musically Daylight take loads of stuff that was great about 90’s alt rock and punk and stick it all in a blender to create a pleasing serving of punk rock that manages to sound fresh despite the heavy dose of nostalgia. Some parts bring to mind the weight and riffs of Quicksand or Handsome, a flavour of Jawbreaker’s barbed melancholy, and even a touch of The Pixies quiet/loud dynamics. OC reckons it sounds like Bush but I have no idea what that band sounds like so I guess that says more about him than it does about me. I understand this record has been a long time coming and I can’t imagine for a second that long time fans are disappointed with this. It’s catchy as hell, decent lyrics and thick production… just a great rock album, perfect for the warmer weather. I’ve put a link to their bandcamp page, if you’re picking up what Daylight are laying down go buy a record or a shirt or something. Stripey shirts & stagedives
