How the Gods Kill – Danzig at The Roundhouse 24th June 2013 Show Review

Taping the late night metal show on tv as a youth  and having it playing in the background while playing games of Blood Bowl or 90% proxy games of 40k. The songs that stayed in my memory was always Man in a Box by Alice in Chains, Refuse/Resist by Sepultura and Liar by Rollins, as well as shit like Skid Row. Another on regular was Mother by a guy who an older mate of mine dubbed “The Evil Dwarf”, that bulging block of darkness was the man, the legend, Danzig.

To be fair, I never really got into Danzig until my early twenties, but when I did, I truly went to the dark side, once even buying my Mum Danzig I for Christmas, alongside a Judas Priest box set. Rob Halford she loved, Glenn, she didn’t, so I got another copy of the CD for the car. When the chance to see Glenn arose, I was suspicious but receiving a ticket to the Roundhouse show for my birthday I threw caution to the wind.
When it comes to old arse punk and metal bands, caution is advised, and all should fear for the legacy of a once beloved group besmirched by their later day sins. One look at the crowd (over the hill punks stuffed into too tight leather trousers and well, the less said about the women, the better) didn’t fill one with confidence. I did get a brief meet up with Corehammer regulars Adam C and Duggan for some pre show hang time.

After some banter it was time time to  check out Glenn. The first few tunes were new ones, to be honest, I have no idea about the newer stuff, having long ago given up on later Danzig. The vocals were a bit ropey and Glenn especially liked smashing the mic into his chest, not the greatest percussionist I have to say.  After a couple of songs and some crowd interaction Glenn started to warm. At this point, Danzig announced that the rest of the set was to be songs from I to III, excellent stuff. It seems Glenn agreed, he started to really come alive for the material that he seemed to really live himself.

Smashing tunes like Twist of Cain, Am I Demon and Devil’s Plaything. Riffs! Feeding off the crowd losing their shit, the night just got better. I was surprised to hear How the Gods Kill and Blood and Tears, notability slower tunes that could have possibly shown fault in the vocal department. At this point, this was not a concern and said vocals were operating on the next level.

About two thirds in Doyle came on, dude looks like an advert for steroids for the mature man. I’m in 2 minds about the Misfits, you can’t help but love the hits, but all that B Movie horror stuff, it’s just not for me. So after a while they played Last Caress which was sweet, then Doyle fucked off and Glenn finished off the set with Not of this World, Soul on Fire and  Mother. My dick got hard.

Obligatory encore was Doyle coming back and smashing Die, Die My Darling. Yeah, being the shit eater that I am, I love the hits. Overall, very decent show, I can’t compare Danzig to any previous experience, but I was very happy with that performance.
