Corehammer was originally intended as an outlet for our ragged band of dungeonpunks to collectively scream into the awning void of cyberspace about our mutual boner for gaming culture and the underground music that fuelled our creative endeavours. Whilst there’s no denying we’ve done well within that remit, I have to be honest that I had envisaged a broader sweep to both elements of our schtick and lately cannot help but feel we’ve come up a little short in that regard.

Whilst not wishing to besmirch the efforts of the other guys, for the most part my contribution to CH has just boiled down to me occasionally ranting on about whatever mainstream hardcore band has caught my attention interspersed with photos and discussion of contemporary Games Workshop armies. Neither of these things inspire me to write with any zeal, passion or regularity. Personally It feels like I have exhausted my muse somewhat and I feel we are in danger of becoming just another Games Workshop obsessed blog. I don’t think that is what any of us ever wanted. At this juncture then, I am forced to consider what I am getting out of all this and what I can actually offer going forward. It would appear that I have reached a crossroads of sorts….. Some time ago, I picked up some of the plastic GW Plague Bearers and an Avatars of War model to use as a Herald (or Daemon Prince) of Nurgle as allies for my Chaos Marines in 40k. Incredibly, breaking from true Tony of Nurgle tradition, I actually painted them in a relatively short time frame. Regrettably, I only used them once or twice.
So rather than leave them as a project completed in relative folly, I decided that 7th Ed 40k was a reasonably good excuse to build a new army – mono-Nurgle Daemons.

CH Single Figure Challenge: May 2014

If page hits and commentary are any indication of success, then our first Single Figure Challenge definitely sparked some interest both within our hallowed ranks and amongst our loyal and gradually expanding readership too, so thanks for all the positive feedback. As I explained before, the purpose of the Single Figure Challenge is to serve as a gentle exercise in self improvement no matter your skill level, rather than a conceited hobbyist dick swinging exhibition, because no one likes those guys. We’re big on sharing knowledge and tips amongst our group in order to raise everyones game and push things forward and the Single Figure Challenge is nothing more than a documentation of those progressions.

As you’ll see from this months offerings there’s stuff from greenshoots novices still learning the basics through to intermediate guys who have a decent grasp of technique and a few lads who have been painting a while and consistently pushed their game to produce some really impressive effects. Sitting back on your arse complaining ‘I’m rubbish blah blah blah” and bemoaning your abilities accomplishes absolutely nothing. If you are going to be that type of fanny you might as well not bother because all that negativity does is create a state of inertia, and that is the true enemy of the hobbyist. Over the course of the last six months I’ve seen dudes who’d always convinced themselves they hated painting and were content to play with bare plastic (I’m looking at you Boardman) start to churn out really solid creative work simply off the back of a bit of encouragement and some shared tips from an enthusiastic community.

It really doesn’t matter where you are at with your hobby skills, what matters is that you’ve got some paint on your brush and you’re getting stuck in and having fun with it and you WILL move forward. I’ll leave you with this wisdom that Minor Threats vocalist Ian Mackaye once retorted to Henry Rollins, when chided over his clumsy glazing technique.. ‘ At least I’m fucking trying….what the fuck have YOU done?’. April 26th saw the arrival of the first Corehammer 40K tournament The Dark Throne. Hosted by Chris Kaye & myself and (ably assisted by the rest of the crew) at the North West Gaming Centre in tropical Stockport, Dark Throne was something we’d all put a lot of time and love into setting up and running in a style that best refelcted our attitude and approach to gaming. A lot of new players are put off from entering tournaments because of the (sadly often true) preconception that they are teeming with gobshites wearing fedoras and them daft leather trenchcoats bellowing Family Guy quotes and getting on everyones tits. That’s not what Corehammer is about brah, we try to run things like a hardcore show, keep the door price low, the spirits high and the attitude chill. Filth lists were actively discouraged as were gamey twats and annoying neckbeard sensibilities. This was to be a day for relaxed gaming and some laughs with other somewhat functional humans. Corehammer Single Figure Challenge

IMAG0877[1]Here at Corehammer we are all great believers in striving to push ourselves and our hobby abilities forward, both as a group and as individuals. Within our circle we have a small number of very talented painters whilst the majority of us hover around the ‘tabletop standard’ mark. In order to push our skills we’re kicking off the monthly Single Figure Challenge (it does have another name but I realise that not everyone is as au fait with Street Level vernacular as us!)  alongside the Oath Of Moment challenge we detailed earlier. Rather than smashing through a load of troops like the Oath Of Moment however, the Single Figure challenge focuses on developing ones painting and modelling skills and throwing a lot more technique at a miniature than you might do for your normal army standard. Hopefully we’ll all raise our game a little and learn new techniques as a result of the positive peer pressure. My commitment to the Oath Of Moment challenge we alluded to the other week is something of a cop out I’m afraid. With The Dark Throne Tournament now only a month away I’m using this part of the challenge as a motivation to get my first 1000 points of 13th Company Space Wolves finished. Now this is the first army I’ve EVER painted. Sure I dabbled with Bloodbowl figures and the ocassional plastic dwarf when I was a kid but this is a whole challenge in itself. I’m a fluff guy primarily, I possess a creative and curious mind. I’ll happily sit and bullshit with you all day about twin tailed comets actually being Thunderhawks, the politics of heresy in the 30K universe, lost Primarchs and all of that caper, but when it comes to practical application of actual brush to model… ehhhhhh not such a natural fit for me.
