Curse of the Oil Snakes

nuln

Nuln Oil, Citadels new armour wash/black ink/Badab Black. Lets be honest, its fucking good isn’t it? You can use this shit for all sorts, adding depth to blacks and dark colours, making metallics look like actual metal not just shiny paint on a plastic spear, all sorts. I ran out though recently and decided I’d try and find something that wasn’t GW.

After a mooch about online, I discovered Army Painter do something called Dark Tone. See, I was going thru gallons of Nuln as I was washing black undercoated Fallen marines to add depth to the black. I swear by Army Painter brushes, and their basing materials are strongly recommended as well. However I’d not tried this shading goo called Dark Tone.

Having ordered a tin of the shit from Element, I realized I’d ordered the wrong thing, the tinned stuff is for actually shading whole models quickly and simply, there is however an ink based Dark Tone in a dropper bottle, luckily my man Byron over at Element changed my order and shipped me the right stuff out no sweat.

Having had a shufty at this stuff its ever so slightly thicker than Nuln Oil, you get more in the dropper than you do in Citadels ever decreasing pots, so its gonna last you a whole lot longer. I used it on my new wet palette, and washed some armour plating on a wood elf horse for my Tale of Gamers article and can say, I’ll be using this in future. It goes on nicely and really adds that depth to metal you need when painting using metallic paints. Added to this its actually cheaper than Citadels Nuln Oil and you cant go wrong at all, if you need an alternative, you can do a hell of a lot worse than check out Army Painter.inflatable motor boats online

IMAG0289The above is a wash over chain mail the old Citadel colour, looks just like Nuln really, below is a wash over Adeptus Grey, one of the new colours. It really flowed well, tiniest bit of water in the mix, looks good, fills the recesses nicely. Ignore the wonky lines, its only a demo pic for the wash, the finished article will appear in my next Tale of Gamers article.

It fills in black nicely too adding that depth I mentioned earlier to solid black base coats before any layering/highlighting.

Here’s some Hope Conspiracy to finish you oily bastard.
