Dope Sick Goblins

The moshing Orc.

After sitting on the boxes for a few weeks, I decided to get in to the swing of things with my Orc and Goblin army that I inherited from Corehammer luminary John Smart. Going through the box brought back some fond memories of gaming in Smart’s old flat five years ago. In particular I loved seeing the Moshing Orc again, seeing this guy made me realise that the imagination of John Smart is not to be messed with.

I’ve been reading a little bit of the lore on Orcs and Goblins, and I’m impressed. They are the embodiment of chaos-with-a-small-‘c’. With my Dwarfs being drinkers, I was hoping that my next army would be straight edge, however, these little bastards would never be able to hold it down as they’re all high as hell on ‘shrooms, the little freaks.

From the slight reading I’ve done on the subject, the impression I get is that if you like playing to an army’s fluff, then you’ll love playing these sneaky little bastards, and playing an army in a fluffy way has always appealed to me.

The next step was to figure out what I actually had. There were a couple of big ol’ boxes in there and it took almost two episodes of The Office to pull everything together. Here’s what we had:

50 Night Goblins with Spears.

10 Black Orcs.

There are also a few Fanatics that weren’t photographed, as well as a Doom Diver and Skarsnik, Warlord of the Eight Peaks. So all in all, it’s a very impressive lot. Of course, there are many options here that are just not viable for a 500 point list, but there are also a hell of a lot that will work out just fine. At the moment I’m thinking mostly Night Goblins, with the Night Goblin Archers, some Fanatics and a Shaman to lead the little fuckers. I have a penchant for large blocks of infantry, so this will be a right pain to paint, but I’m already having some good ideas, based on some of the models Smart provided, which were really classically painted. I won’t be redoing them, as they’re great, but I will be taking influence from them. Check these out.

That’s the spirit of ’92 right there! Goblin Green bases, bright green skin, brilliant. While I’m looking for more of a muted brown-green tone for the flesh, I’m thinking that using that dark turquoise tone for the Night Goblin robes would look great. I was also thinking of making the Archers and standard units have slightly different coloured robes. I think I could pull off a good black robe with dark red highlights which might be cool for the Archers.

I’m starting to get excited about these little bastards now, but I’m also looking forward to painting the metallics on some of those HUGE orc weapons. Next post, I will have the list to which I intend to work and from there I can start thinking about maybe playing a couple of games.
